Gum Disease Treatment in Caringbah
The health of your gums affects the health of your teeth. If your gums are neglected, the effect will also show on your teeth.
At Caringbah Dental Care, we want to raise awareness about the importance of healthy gums. Gum disease is a serious dental problem, which can cause tooth loss and even be life threatening if untreated.
We have comprehensive gum disease treatments available for our patients, including a personalised oral hygiene routine.
Gum Disease – Can It Be Treated?
Gum disease has stages. It is the last stage, called periodontal disease, which can’t be treated. Its damage can only be managed.
It starts as gingivitis. The gums are red and swollen. They easily bleed when pressure is applied, like during brushing sessions. This happens when plaque and tartar buildup have gathered around the teeth and have begun to irritate the gums.
In gingivitis, the teeth are still firmly in place. But if the plaque and tartar are not removed, the gums slowly recede, exposing the roots. Pain then follows as the roots react to hot and cold. Gum disease can still be reversed at this stage. With a dental scale and clean, a strict dental diet, and a good oral hygiene routine, your gums can slowly heal.
But if you neglect your condition, it will slowly progress to periodontal disease. The gums continue to recede as the plaque and tartar thrive. Pockets form below the gum line, trapping food debris and bacteria. As the pockets deepen, the teeth slowly loosen. This stage can’t be treated at home. Periodontal disease will continue to worsen and can even be life threatening.
What Are Some Common Causes?
The following are the common causes of gum disease:
- Poor dental hygiene
- Hormonal changes and imbalances
- Medical conditions (HIV, diabetes, cancer, etc.)
- Medications
- Smoking
Treatment Provided at Caringbah Dental Care
As mentioned, treating a gum disease is only effective if done before it progresses to periodontal disease. Treatment includes a series of dental appointments that include professional cleaning, diet and health habit formation, and strict oral hygiene instruction.
In a professional cleaning, your dentist removes all the plaque and tartar buildup in your mouth and smooths the surfaces of the teeth. This way, it is more difficult for plaque to reattach.
Your dentist will create a strict oral hygiene program that you have to follow. You will be scheduled for follow up check-ups to monitor your progress.
Gum disease treatment requires full commitment. Results may not appear as soon as you want them to. The focus is on establishing correct habits in terms of caring for your teeth.
